Slow Response Troubleshooting
Is your Astrion Remote responding slowly, lagging, or missing button presses? Follow this guide to identify and resolve the most common causes of slow response.
Overview
Slow response on your Astrion Remote can manifest in several ways: delayed button presses, lag when navigating the interface, or commands taking too long to execute. In most cases, the issue is related to one of the following:
- Network connectivity — Wi-Fi signal strength or latency
- Battery or power — low battery or power-saving settings
- Firmware version — outdated firmware can cause performance issues
- Home Assistant or automation load — heavy automation or Node-RED flows
- Cache or background processes — accumulated cache or background apps
💡 Quick Tip: If your remote feels slow only after waking from sleep, this is normal behavior — the remote takes a moment to re-establish its connection. If the lag persists beyond a few seconds, continue with this guide.
Common Symptoms
Identify which of these symptoms match your experience:
Delayed Button Press
1–3 second delay between pressing a button and action
Interface Lag
Scrolling or navigating the UI feels sluggish
Commands Not Reaching
Some button presses are missed entirely
Worse After Wake
Slow only when waking from sleep mode
Inconsistent Performance
Works fine sometimes, lags at other times
Troubleshooting Steps
Work through these steps in order. Test your remote after each step to see if the issue is resolved.
1 Check Battery and Power
Low battery can cause performance issues as the remote reduces power to conserve energy.
- Check the battery level in the remote's status bar or Settings → About
- If battery is below 20%, charge the remote fully
- If the remote is not charging, try a different USB cable or power source
- Check that battery optimization is disabled for the Astrion Remote in your device settings
💡 Tip: Some users have reported improved performance after disabling battery optimization for the remote in their Android or iOS settings[reference:0].
2 Check Network Connection
Astrion Remote relies on a stable Wi-Fi connection to communicate with Home Assistant and execute commands.
- Verify the remote is connected to the correct Wi-Fi network
- Check Wi-Fi signal strength — if weak, move closer to the router
- Test your network latency — high latency (ping) can cause noticeable delays
- If using 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, try switching to 5GHz (or vice versa) to see if performance improves
- Restart your router and Home Assistant server
3 Restart Your Astrion Remote
A simple restart can clear temporary issues and refresh the remote's connection.
- Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds, then select Restart
- Alternatively, go to Settings → System → Restart
- Wait for the remote to fully restart (about 30 seconds) before testing
4 Update Firmware
Outdated firmware can cause performance issues and bugs that have been resolved in newer releases.
- Go to Settings → About to check your current firmware version
- Visit the Firmware Updates page to see if a newer version is available
- If an update is available, download and install it via OTA update
- After updating, restart the remote and test performance
⚠️ Important: Always ensure your remote has at least 50% battery before performing a firmware update to prevent interruption.
5 Check Home Assistant and Automation Load
Heavy automation flows, especially in Node-RED or complex scripts, can introduce latency between button press and action execution.
- Check if your automations are running efficiently — look for long-running scripts or loops
- If using Node-RED, consider using the Harmony Button Mapper or similar optimizations to reduce latency[reference:1]
- Some users have reported that routing commands through Node-RED provides instantaneous button presses compared to direct HA automation[reference:2]
- Review your Home Assistant logs for errors or warnings that might indicate performance bottlenecks
💡 Community Tip: "I have all my Astrion commands running through my NodeRED Harmony Button Mapper. This gives me instantaneous button presses. Even though it does take a button press to wake the remote then the commands will be sent instantaneously."[reference:3]
6 Clear Cache and Reset
Accumulated cache or background processes can slow down the remote's performance over time.
- Go to Settings → Apps → Astrion Remote → Storage and tap Clear Cache
- If the issue persists, try Clear Data (note: this will reset your settings)
- As a last resort, perform a factory reset:
- Go to Settings → System → Reset Options → Erase all data
- This will restore the remote to its original state — you will need to set it up again
⚠️ Warning: Factory reset will erase all your settings, configurations, and paired devices. Only use this as a last resort.
7 Advanced: Check Wi-Fi Channel and Interference
Wi-Fi interference from neighboring networks or other devices can cause intermittent lag and slow response.
- Use a Wi-Fi analyzer app to check for channel congestion in your area
- If using 2.4GHz, try switching to a less crowded channel (1, 6, or 11)
- If using 5GHz, try a different channel or band
- Move other wireless devices (Bluetooth speakers, baby monitors) away from the remote and router
