"Device is Empty" — Fix Guide
If your Astrion Remote displays "Device is Empty" or "View is Empty," don't worry — this does not mean the remote is defective. In almost every case, it means Astrion has successfully connected to Home Assistant, but there is no dashboard available to display.
Before You Begin — Avoid Confusing Names
To prevent synchronization issues and simplify troubleshooting, we strongly recommend avoiding the following names for dashboards or views:
These names can easily be confused with Home Assistant's own built-in concepts. Instead, use unique, descriptive names such as:

💡 Why this matters: "Home" and "Default" already have special meanings inside Home Assistant. Using them for your dashboards or views can create ambiguity for both users and the Astrion synchronization process. Unique names make troubleshooting much easier.
Why Does This Happen?
Astrion Remote does not create its own interface. Instead, it displays the dashboard you build in Home Assistant using RosCard.
Think of Astrion as a dedicated Home Assistant controller:
If there is no dashboard, no View, no RosCard cards, or invalid entities in the View, Astrion has nothing to display — and shows "Device is Empty".
💡 Good News: This is almost always a configuration issue, not a hardware issue. Your Astrion Remote is working correctly — it just needs something to display.
Step 1 — Confirm Astrion Firmware
On your Astrion Remote, go to Settings → About. Please note:
- Hardware Version
- Firmware Version
For the latest firmware, see the Firmware Updates Guide.
Step 2 — Confirm RosCard Version
Please also confirm your RosCard version. Older RosCard versions may not support newer firmware.
- Check your RosCard version in HACS → Frontend
- If you're running an older version, update via HACS
Step 3 — Confirm the Home Assistant User
This is the most common cause.
Astrion uses the Home Assistant account associated with the Long-Lived Access Token.
Correct Setup
Incorrect Setup
⚠️ Important: Always verify:
- ✅ Dashboard created by the same user
- ✅ View created by the same user
- ✅ Long-lived token belongs to the same user
- ✅ Astrion logs in using that same user
Step 4 — Check Your Dashboard
Open Home Assistant. Navigate to Settings → Dashboards. Confirm your dashboard exists.
💡 Tip: Use a unique name like Astrion,
Living Room, or Lounge to avoid confusion with
Home Assistant's built-in dashboards.
Step 5 — Check the View
Open the dashboard. Verify it contains at least one View.
If there are no Views, Astrion cannot display anything.
⚠️ Check View Visibility
Even if a View exists, it may be hidden in Home Assistant. This is a common oversight that can cause the "Device is Empty" error.
- In your Dashboard settings, check the Visibility setting for each View
- If a View is set to "Hidden", Astrion will not be able to access it
- Make sure the View is "Visible" for the user Astrion is logged in as
⚠️ Important: A View that is hidden in Home Assistant will not appear on Astrion, even if everything else is configured correctly. Always verify that your View is set to Visible.
💡 Tip: Use a unique name for your View — avoid Home
or Default — and make sure it's visible.
Step 6 — Add a RosCard
Inside the View:
- Click Add Card
- Select a RosCard type
- Configure your entities
For more details, see the RosCard Guide.
⚠️ Common Mistake — Empty Cards
A View may have a RosCard added, but the card itself contains no entities. This can also cause the "Device is Empty" error.
- Open each RosCard in your View
- Verify that at least one entity is assigned to the card
- If a card has no entities, remove it or add entities to it
⚠️ Important: A RosCard with no entities is effectively empty. Astrion will not display anything for that card, and if all cards are empty, the View will appear empty.
Step 6.1 — Check Entity Validity
Even if a RosCard has entities assigned, those entities may be invalid or unavailable in Home Assistant.
- In Home Assistant, go to Developer Tools → States
- Search for the entity ID used in your RosCard
- If the entity is "unavailable" or "unknown", it cannot be displayed
- If the entity does not exist at all, the card will fail to load
Common Entity Issues
- Typo in entity_id: Check for spelling errors
- Entity renamed: The device may have been renamed in Home Assistant
- Integration removed: The device or integration may no longer be available
- Device offline: The entity may be unavailable because the device is not connected
⚠️ Important: A RosCard with invalid or unavailable entities will not display correctly. Always verify that your entities are valid and available in Home Assistant before troubleshooting Astrion.
Step 7 — Test in Home Assistant
Before using Astrion:
- Log into Home Assistant using the same user
- Can you see the dashboard?
- Can you see the RosCard?
⚠️ Important: If Home Assistant cannot display it, Astrion cannot either.
Step 8 — Verify Astrion Connection
On your Astrion Remote, go to Settings → Home Assistant. Confirm:
- ✅ Connected
- ✅ Correct IP address
- ✅ Correct Port
Common Mistakes
- ❌ Dashboard created under User A, but Astrion logs in using User B
- ❌ Dashboard has no Views
- ❌ View contains no RosCard
- ❌ RosCard has no entities assigned
- ❌ RosCard contains invalid or unavailable entities
- ❌ View is set to "Hidden" in Home Assistant
- ❌ Dashboard named "Home"
- ❌ View named "Default"
- ❌ Dashboard named "Main"
- ❌ Old RosCard version
- ❌ Incorrect Home Assistant IP address
✅ Quick Fix: If you can assign entities to the Astrion's physical buttons, but the dashboard still says "Device is Empty," this means your connection to Home Assistant is working. The issue is almost always dashboard configuration, Views, user permissions, or entity validity — not the remote itself.
